Herniated Disc Running

The weather sure is beautiful here in Los Angeles. We have the best beaches, boardwalks, malls, and parks. All of these areas make for great places to exercise. Running, jogging, rollerblading, and hiking are just around the corner for all of us. Running is an activity that many turn to because it is works to get the heart rate up and increase endorphin levels so you feel better. The benefits for the heart and lungs are researched beyond any doubt and it is good for you. There is one thing that we want to look at, and that is what it can do to your discs in your back. Can running cause a herniated disc? It is possible but it is not up there with a major cause. It can put excess pressure on the lower back and create an axial load. It can also cause repetitive stress to the area but there is one thing we should think about here and that is what is the current condition of the disc? If there is a pre-existing mechanical problem such as degeneration or other arthritis running can cause repetitive stress. It can also put stress on the knees, hips, and ankle joints. There are many things to consider and the pros and the cons of this activity have to be taken into account. If you do have a pre-existing condition then you might want to get it fixed. After it is fixed then you could get back out there and run. There are alternatives that you can consider; you can always walk fast which creates less impact and less heart rate increase. The elliptical trainer is a machine that works with the natural motion of the joints and spine and can work the best for people with disc problems. The shoes are something that you will want to invest money into if you are an active person who exercises a lot. They are the foundation for the entire body. And not to forget, the orthotic inserts work great to keep the arches of the feet raised and working properly.
